Ala is a bilingual online blog that aims to provide a space for research, analysis, and commentary about Kerala culture and politics. Since its inception in 2018, our editorial board has been made up of volunteers who work collaboratively to release monthly issues and a podcast—editing and reviewing, soliciting guest contributors, podcast production—and also managing our social media presence and running workshops.
We are currently looking for new editors to join the team in the following roles:
- English-Language Editor
- Malayalam-Language Editor
- Social Media and Design Editor
This is a great opportunity for someone who is interested to learn and excited about our mission of bringing together a diverse group of contributors, and making niche subjects and specialist expertise accessible to broader audiences.
As a part of our team, you will get to dabble in a variety of formats, including podcasts, and will gain valuable experience in editing, podcasting, and writing. Please note that the roles below are not strictly demarcated; our current team members learn and take on multiple roles based on their evolving interests and capacities. As such, we appreciate applicants with skills distributed across these requirements and those with unconventional profiles.
Required Qualifications – Language Editors:

- Enthusiasm to take initiative, coordinate the team as needed, and to propose/learn about new forms/content
- Advanced knowledge of English (for English editor) or Malayalam (for Malayalam editor); translation skills are a bonus
- Editing skills and an eye for detail
- An interest in breaking down specialist language for a general readership
- Willingness and capacity to locate and solicit contributions from people working in/on Kerala
- Commitment of at least a year
Required Qualifications – Social Media Editor:
- Experience working with WordPress and site-hosting services
- Social media savvy
- Experience working with Audacity, Photoshop, Canva, or similar audio-visual software
- Interested in storytelling and building readership
- Commitment of at least a year
What is the work commitment? Ala publishes an issue on the last day of each month, each comprising 2-3 items such as written pieces or podcast episodes. Each editor commits 5-10 hours a month on each issue. Since this is voluntary work, we aim to keep things as flexible as possible so that each of us can contribute according to our availability. We work on a collective model where we take turns coordinating and sharing labor.
What is our work culture? This is unpaid and part-time labour, so we try to make sure each person in the team derives other kinds of value from their work, such as autonomy, networking, building skills and confidence, and, not the least, making friends! We enjoy working together to implement new visions and ideas from team members.
We also keep our issues small to ensure that we work closely and meaningfully with contributors. At Ala, we are also committed to soliciting and publishing work from a wide range of contributors, so providing them with the support needed to bring out the best in their work is a top priority. We rarely publish submissions as they are received, nor do we make changes to a piece without consulting with the author. We frequently receive positive feedback about our process.
In sum, we value quality over quantity and collective work over deadlines.

കേരള ചരിത്രം, സംസ്കാരം, രാഷ്ട്രീയം, പ്രവാസജീവിതം എന്നീ മേഖലകളിൽ ഗവേഷണാടിസ്ഥാനത്തിലുള്ള ലേഖനങ്ങളും പോഡ്കാസ്റ്റുകളും പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കുന്ന ബ്ലോഗാണ് അല. 2018 ൽ ഈ സംരംഭം തുടങ്ങിയതിൽപിന്നെ ലേഖനങ്ങൾ ക്ഷണിക്കുന്നതും എഡിറ്റ് ചെയ്യുന്നതും, പോഡ്കാസ്റ്റുകൾ സംഘടിപ്പിച്ച് അവ റെക്കോർഡ് ചെയ്യുന്നതും, സാമൂഹ്യ മാധ്യമങ്ങൾ വഴി അലയുടെ സാന്നിദ്ധ്യം നിലനിർത്തുന്നതും, വർക്ക്ഷോപ്പുകൾ നടത്തുന്നതും ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന അലയുടെ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ ഏകോപിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് വോളന്റിയർമാരുടെ ഒരു ചെറിയ കൂട്ടായ്മയാണ്.
ഈ കൂട്ടായ്മയുടെ ഭാഗമാകാൻ മൂന്ന് സ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലേക്ക് അപേക്ഷകൾ ക്ഷണിക്കുന്നു:

പലതരം വൈദഗ്ധ്യങ്ങളുള്ള, പല ജീവിതപാതകളിൽ നിന്നുമുള്ള വ്യക്തികളുടെ ശബ്ദങ്ങൾ ഒരുമിച്ചുകൊണ്ടുവരാനും, ഗവേഷണസ്ഥാപനങ്ങളിൽ മാത്രം തങ്ങിനിൽക്കുന്ന അറിവുകൾ പൊതുധാരയിൽ കൊണ്ടുവരാനും താല്പര്യമുള്ള വ്യക്തികൾക്ക് നല്ലൊരു അവസരമാണിത്.
