Pothikkettu is a monthly editorial that ‘wraps up’ the issue for our readers.
Dear Readers,
Ala’s 65th Issue is finally here. The authors and the entire team are thrilled with the support you have shown our previous Issue.
This month, we are psyched to share the Malayalam translation of Nehal Ahmed’s article on the intimacies that Malayalam cinema offers to non-Malayalee migrant families in the Gulf. Nehal’s article was originally published in English in our previous issue. Abdul Shafeeq’s translation stays true to the original, weaving it into a beautiful narrative in Malayalam. As we mentioned in our previous editorial, do check out Mohamed Shafeeq Karinkurayil and May Joseph’s previously published articles on the blog that enrich our understanding of migration through personal and evocative stories.
In light of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections drawing near, Suraj Jacob’s article maps the geographical spread of the BJP and Congress parties in India, with special focus on Kerala. Through this exercise of chronological mapping that highlights patterns and variations in electoral politics, Suraj draws our attention to questions of political representation and legitimacy. Also check out our interview with Ruchi Chaturvedi whose recent book Violence of Democracy looks at party politics in North Kerala. Archana Ravi’s illustration that accompanies Ruchi’s article presents us with another form of mapping that encourages us to look at how violence and conflict get mirrored in a larger political system.
Happy Reading!
