Through his evocative illustrations, Vipindas stirs an emotion shared by Malayalis in any part of the world, and transports them to a shared space and time—Kerala’s monsoons.

A driver of the red-and-yellow KSRTC bus prepares to leave, just as a passenger tries to get in, helped by someone. The bus has tarpaulin sheets drawn over its windows to keep out the lashing rain. A child peeps from under the sheet to look at the rain outside, perhaps without being spotted by an elder in the next seat. A man stands under a teashop’s awning in the pouring rain, his mundu tied up and an umbrella tucked away under one arm, as he sips hot tea from a glass. The poster of Kireedam on the wall takes you back in time. Elsewhere, a white ambassador taxi turns around the corner of a dark, rain-soaked country road, its dim headlights leading the way.
ചുവപ്പും മഞ്ഞയും പൂശിയ കെ.എസ്.ആർ.ടി.സി. ബസ് പുറപ്പെടാൻ തുടങ്ങുന്നതിനിടെ ഒരു യാത്രക്കാരൻ മറ്റൊരാളുടെ സഹായത്തോടെ ബസ്സിൽ കയറുന്നു. തകർത്തുപെയ്യുന്ന മഴവെള്ളം അകത്തു വീഴാതിരിക്കാൻ ബസിന്റെ ജനാലകളെ ഒരു ടാർപാളി കൊണ്ട് മൂടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഒരുപക്ഷേ കൂടെയുള്ള മുതിർന്നയാളുടെ കണ്ണ് വെട്ടിച്ചെന്നോണം ഒരു കൊച്ചു പയ്യൻ ആ ടാർപ്പാളിനടിയിൽ കൂടി പുറത്തെ മഴ നോക്കികൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. കോരിച്ചൊരിയുന്ന മഴയിൽ, മുണ്ട് മടക്കികുത്തി കക്ഷത്തിൽ കുടയും വച്ച ഒരാൾ ചായക്കടയുടെ ചായ്പ്പിൽ നിന്നു ചായ കുടിക്കുകയാണ്. ചായക്കടയുടെ മതിലിൽ ഒട്ടിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന കിരീടം സിനിമയുടെ പോസ്റ്റർ കാഴ്ചക്കാരനെ ഒരുപാടു കാലം പുറകോട്ട് കൊണ്ട് പോകുന്നു. അല്പം മാറി മഴവെള്ളം കെട്ടി കിടക്കുന്ന നാട്ടു വഴിയിലൂടെ ഒരു വെള്ള അംബാസഡർ കാർ അരണ്ട ഹെഡ് ലൈറ്റ് വെളിച്ചത്തിൽ വളവു തിരിഞ്ഞു വരുന്നു.
The project started when Vipin, a visual artist based in Bangalore, came home to Kerala eight months ago and couldn’t go back because of the lockdown. ‘Since I was working from home, I got to enjoy the monsoons this year. This is how this series started’, he says, adding that the intention was to reconstruct a series of sketches based on common scenes that Malayalis have seen or experienced, tied together with the mood and character that the rains bring to Kerala.
എട്ടു മാസങ്ങൾക്ക് മുമ്പ് കോവിഡ് ലോക്ഡൗൺ മൂലം കേരളത്തിൽ എത്തിയപ്പോഴാണ് ബാംഗ്ലൂരിൽ വിഷ്വൽ ആർട്ടിസ്റ്റായി ജോലിനോക്കുന്ന വിപിൻദാസ് ഈ പ്രോജക്ട് ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത്. ‘കോവിഡ് ലോക്ഡൗൺ മൂലം വീട്ടിലിരുന്ന് ജോലി ചെയ്യേണ്ടിവന്നതിനാൽ ഇത്തവണത്തെ മഴക്കാലം ആസ്വദിച്ചു; ഇങ്ങിനെയാണ്‌ ചിത്രങ്ങളുടെ പരമ്പര ആരംഭിച്ചത്’. മലയാളികൾ മഴയെ ഗൃഹാതുരതയോടെ, എന്നാൽ, അതിൻറെ തനതായ വികാരത്തോടെ കൂടി ഓർക്കുന്ന ഒരു പറ്റം ചിത്രങ്ങളുടെ പരമ്പര തയ്യാറാക്കുക എന്നത് കൂടി പ്രധാനമായും മനസ്സിലുണ്ടായിരുന്നു എന്ന് വിപിൻദാസ് ഓർത്തെടുക്കുന്നു.
Vipin says many people asked him about the sketch of the teashop, and whether there was a reference image. He says: ‘Truth is, neither the tree nor the shop exists…they’re scenes I have seen somewhere, etched into memory. And I wanted a poster that connects with that time. And because I’m a Lalettan fan, I decided to use the Kireedam poster’. To him, the poster also places the sketch, much like the other ones, in a specific period of Kerala history. ‘A transport bus, as seen in the work, is fast becoming a thing of the past; the tarpaulin sheets don’t exist anymore. Of course, it will resonate with any Malayali viewer, even more so as time passes. In a few more years, people will ask what this is. I pick themes like these for my works. A white Ambassador taxi is similar. In a few years, the tile-roofed house amidst thick foliage will be gone, and there will be another concrete building there’, he adds.
പലരും വിപിനോട് ഈ ചായക്കടയെക്കുറിച്ചു ചോദിയ്ക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി. ‘സത്യം പറഞ്ഞാൽ അങ്ങിനെ ഒരു മരമോ കടയോ ഇല്ല. അത് ഞാൻ എവിടെയോ കണ്ടതിന്റെ ഓർമ്മകൾ മാത്രമാണ്’, വിപിൻ പറയുന്നു. ‘ആ കാലത്തിന്റെ ഓർമ്മയെ ഞാൻ ഒരു ചിത്രമായി വരച്ചിടുക മാത്രമാണ് ചെയ്തതത്. ലാലേട്ടൻറെ ആരാധകനായത് കൊണ്ട് കിരീടം സിനിമയുടെ പോസ്റ്റർ ഉപയോഗിച്ചു’, വിപിൻ തുടരുന്നു. വിപിനെ സംബന്ധിച്ചിടത്തോളം, ഈ ചിത്രം കേരളത്തിന്റെ ഒരു പ്രത്യേക കാലത്തിന്റെ ഒരു ഓർമ നിലനിർത്തുന്നു. ‘ചിത്രത്തിൽ കാണുന്ന കെ.എസ്.ആർ.ടി.സി. ബസ് ഇപ്പോൾ അധികം എവിടെയും കാണ്മാൻ ഇല്ല, അത് ഒരു ഓർമയായി മാറാൻ ഇനി അധിക കാലം വേണ്ട. ടാർപ്പായ കൊണ്ട് മൂടുന്ന ഏർപ്പാട് ഇപ്പോൾ ഒരു ബസിലും ഇല്ല. എല്ലാ കാലത്തും ഒരു മലയാളിക്ക് ഈ ചിത്രത്തോട് താദാത്മ്യപ്പെടാൻ സാധിക്കും. ഏതാനും കൊല്ലങ്ങൾ കഴിയുമ്പോൾ ജനങ്ങൾ ഈ ചിത്രങ്ങൾ കാണുമ്പോൾ, ഇത് എന്താണ് എന്ന് ചോദിക്കും. ഇങ്ങനെ ചിന്തിപ്പിക്കുന്ന വിഷയങ്ങളാണ് ഞാൻ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കാറുള്ളത്. വെള്ള അംബാസഡർ കാറിന്റെ കാര്യവും അതുപോലെ തന്നെയാണ്. മരങ്ങളും പച്ചപ്പും ഉള്ള പറമ്പിന്റെ നടുവിൽ കാണുന്ന ഓടിട്ട കെട്ടിടം ക്രമേണ കോൺക്രീറ്റ് കെട്ടിടനത്തിന് വഴിമാറി കൊടുക്കും’, വിപിൻ കൂട്ടിച്ചേർത്തു.
Monsoons become the constant–a thread that connects these scenes. From the landscape to its people, and from the state’s economy and politics to everyday life, rains have been a perennial part of Malayali identity. Beautiful pictures. It take me to some memorable moments of monsoon in my childhood days. When we look at this pictures we can feel some life on it.
