Ala is a bilingual online blog venture that aims to provide a space for research, analysis and commentary about Kerala culture and politics. We hope that academics, artists, photographers, journalists, activists, bloggers and anyone with an informed and well-researched opinion will take advantage of this platform.
Our editorial board is made up of volunteers that work collaboratively to release monthly issues and a podcast — editing and reviewing, soliciting guest contributors, podcast production and managing our social media presence. We are currently looking for a new editor to join the team. Here’s what we’re looking for.
Required qualifications:
- Advanced knowledge of English (and at least basic Malayalam)
- Editing skills and eye for detail
- Ideally someone with flexible working schedules
- Willingness and capacity to locate and solicit contributions from people working in/on Kerala
- Enthusiasm to learn and take initiative to propose/learn about new forms/content
Preferred qualifications:
- Located in Kerala
- Experience working with WordPress
- Social media savvy
- Experience working with Audacity, Photoshop or other similar audio-visual software
This is a great opportunity for someone who is interested to learn and excited about our mission of bringing together a diverse group of contributors, and making niche subjects and specialist expertise accessible to broader audiences. As a part of our team, you’ll get to dabble in a variety of formats, including podcasts.
Please note that this is a voluntary position, and each editor commits 5-10 hours a month on each issue. We aim to keep things as flexible and fluid as possible so that each of us can contribute according to our availability.
If you’re interested in joining our small team, please send across a resume, two writing samples (not research papers/journal articles), and a brief (250-300 words) description of your interest in joining Ala and any relevant experience, though no prior experience is necessary.
