The much-anticipated Ala Writing Workshop is back for a third time! After a great run in 2022, we are back with an opportunity for anyone to shape their ideas into a well-researched popular piece.
Over the course of the last few years, we’ve had the pleasure of working with a long list of incredible writers, researchers, and artists. At the same time, we’re committed to encouraging more students, researchers, and bloggers to write thoughtfully, and with authority, about the topics that interest them.
This October, we are inviting folks to participate in our two-day writing workshop aimed at developing the skills needed to research, write, edit, and package writing in a way that speaks to the desired audience.
This time, we are also open to those writing in both English and Malayalam. Though sessions will be in English, interactions will be bilingual, and writing support will be provided to those writing in Malayalam. Please feel free to send in your application material in either language.
Ala is committed to bridging worlds. We aim to bring together a diverse group of contributors, and make niche subjects and specialist expertise accessible to broader audiences while encouraging creative expression, critical thinking and open dialogue. The workshop curriculum is grounded in this commitment — whether you are an academic looking to package your research for a wider audience, a writer or creator looking to learn how to conduct reliable research, or a student working to improve their research and writing, this workshop is for you. We strongly encourage applicants from marginalised backgrounds and identities to apply.

Please note, this is not an academic writing workshop that will provide instruction on how to write research papers for academic journals. Applications towards journal-type publishing will be rejected.
Who can apply?
Whether you are a student, a researcher in any field, a blogger, or an artist—all are welcome. Since this is only a two-day workshop, to receive a participation certificate you must attend both days and complete the writing project.
What do I get out of this?
As mentioned earlier, this workshop is an opportunity to work on a piece of writing with the support of members of the Ala team and fellow researchers. If your final product after this workshop is related to Kerala or Kerala studies, we at Ala will be happy to consider your work for publication. Last year’s workshop resulted in a two-part special issue (here and here) which featured participants’ work.
What does the workshop entail?
The workshop will have two 3-4 hour sessions over two Saturdays. The workshop will be conducted virtually, on Zoom – and is accessible using a free Zoom account. During the two workshop sessions, our team and expert guest speakers will guide you through developing your research into pieces of writing for a general audience.
We will try to keep the workshop as interactive and engaging as possible! In order to ensure each participant receives ample support, and feedback, the workshop will be limited to a small group.
We want this workshop to be a space for creation and exchange. Participants will be expected to work on an article through the course of the workshop. This can be an article, political or social commentary, or book or movie review. Participants will be expected to submit an abstract of the piece during the application process, and to bring a working draft to Session Two. During Session Two, the Ala team will provide participants with the feedback and support needed to turn their working draft into a publication-ready piece. SCHEDULE
Day One: Saturday, October 7 (4-hour session): This session will be instructional. Participants will be taken through tips and best practices for writing research-backed articles and essays, and introduced to a bundle of skills that will enable them to become more confident writers.
Day Two: Saturday, October 14 (4-hour session): The session will be practical and interactive, and include sessions on how best you can pitch and promote your writing online. During this session, participants will also receive feedback and suggestions on their writing project, and convert their working draft to a final product. Please bring a working draft of your project to the second session so we have something to work on together!

പൊതുവായനക്കായുള്ള ഒരു ഹ്രസ്വരചനാ പ്രോജക്റ്റ് ഒന്നിച്ചിരുന്നു പൂർത്തിയാക്കാം. ഇതിനായി വേണ്ട ഗവേഷണം, എഴുത്ത്, എഡിറ്റിംഗ് എന്നീ പ്രാവീണ്യങ്ങളുടെ അടിസ്ഥാനവശങ്ങൾ പഠിക്കാനും, പ്രസിദ്ധീകരണത്തിലേക്കുള്ള വഴികൾ മനസ്സിലാക്കാനും ഞങ്ങളോടൊപ്പം ചേരൂ.
തുടർച്ചയായ മൂന്നാംവർഷമാണ് അല ഈ ശില്പശാല സംഘടിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. ഏതൊരാൾക്കും സ്വന്തം ആശയത്തെ ഗവേഷണം ചെയ്ത് ഒരു ജനപ്രിയ ലേഖനമാക്കാനുള്ള അവസരമൊരുക്കുകയാണ് ഈ ശില്പശാലയുടെ ലക്ഷ്യം. കഴിഞ്ഞ കുറച്ച് വർഷങ്ങളായി, പ്രഗത്ഭരായ എഴുത്തുകാർ, ഗവേഷകർ, കലാകാരന്മാർ എന്നിവരോടൊപ്പം പ്രവർത്തിക്കുവാൻ സാധിച്ചതിൽ ഞങ്ങൾക്ക് സന്തോഷമുണ്ട്. അതേ സമയം, കൂടുതൽ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളെയും പുതുതലമുറ ഗവേഷകരെയും ബ്ലോഗർമാരെയും പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുവാനും അവർക്ക് താത്പര്യമുള്ള വിഷയങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് ആധികാരികമായി ഗൗരവപൂർവ്വം എഴുതാൻ സഹായിക്കുവാനും ഞങ്ങൾ പ്രതിബദ്ധരാണ്. അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ പാർശ്വവത്‌കൃത വിഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും സ്വത്വങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നുമുള്ള എഴുത്താളുകളെ ഞങ്ങൾ പ്രത്യേകം ക്ഷണിക്കുന്നു.
പൊതുവായനക്കാരോട് ആശയവിനിമയം ചെയ്യുന്ന രീതിയിൽ ലേഖനങ്ങൾ എഴുതുവാനും, അതിനുവേണ്ട ഗവേഷണത്തിനും എഡിറ്റിംഗിനും ആവശ്യമായ കഴിവുകൾ വികസിപ്പിക്കുവാനും ലക്ഷ്യമിട്ടു 2023 ഒക്ടോബറിൽ നടത്തുന്ന രണ്ടു ദിവസം നീണ്ടു നില്‌ക്കുന്ന ശില്പശാലയിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കുവാൻ അപേക്ഷ ക്ഷണിക്കുന്നു. ഇംഗ്ലീഷിനൊപ്പം മലയാളത്തിൽ എഴുതുന്നവർക്കും ഇത്തവണ ശില്പശാലയിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കാൻ അവസരമുണ്ട്. സെഷനുകൾ ഇംഗ്ലീഷിലാണെങ്കിലും, ശേഷമുള്ള ചോദ്യോത്തരങ്ങൾ മലയാളത്തിലും ഇംഗ്ലീഷിലുമായിരിക്കും. കൂടാതെ മലയാളത്തിൽ എഴുതുന്നവർക്ക് നിർദ്ദേശങ്ങളും പിന്തുണയും ഞങ്ങൾ നൽകുന്നതായിരിക്കും. നിങ്ങളുടെ അപേക്ഷ മലയാളത്തിലൊ ഇംഗ്ലീഷിലൊ അയക്കാവുന്നതാണ്.

ദയവായി ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുക: ഇത് അക്കാദമിക് ജേണലുകൾക്കായി ഗവേഷണ പ്രബന്ധങ്ങൾ എങ്ങനെ എഴുതണം എന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ഒരു അക്കാദമിക് റൈറ്റിംഗ് ശില്പശാലയല്ല. അതുകൊണ്ടു തന്നെ അത്തരം പ്രൊപ്പോസലുകൾ സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നതല്ല.

ശില്പശാലയുടെ ഘടന:
രണ്ട് ശനിയാഴ്ചകളിലായി 3-4 മണിക്കൂർ ദൈർഘ്യമുള്ള രണ്ട് ഭാഗങ്ങളാണ് ശില്പശാലയിലുള്ളത്. സൂമിൽ ഓൺലൈൻ ആയാണ് നടത്തുന്നത്; ഒരു സൗജന്യ സൂം അക്കൗണ്ട് ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ഇതിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കാവുന്നതാണ്. രണ്ട് സെഷനുകളിലായി, ഞങ്ങളുടെ ടീമും വിദഗ്ദ്ധ അതിഥികളും നിങ്ങളുടെ ഗവേഷണം പൊതുവായനക്കാരുമായി സംവദിക്കുന്ന തരത്തിലേക്ക് വികസിപ്പിക്കാൻ സഹായിക്കും. തുറന്ന സംഭാഷണത്തിനുള്ള വേദിയായിട്ടാണ് അല ഈ ശില്പശാലയെ വിഭാവനം ചെയ്തിട്ടുള്ളത്. ഓരോരുത്തർക്കും മതിയായ പിന്തുണയും നിർദ്ദേശങ്ങളും ലഭിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെന്ന് ഉറപ്പാക്കുവാൻ ശില്പശാല ഒരു ചെറിയ ഗ്രൂപ്പിലേക്ക് പരിമിതപ്പെടുത്തും.
