It is hard to believe that seven years have passed since a small group of academics decided to start a Kerala studies blog. As far as non-monetized blogs go, Ala is solidly approaching middle age! As always, we are deeply thankful for the enduring support of our readers, contributors, and well-wishers. Contrary to the proverb, it has been seven years of good luck for us because of you all. Our team members have historically come from this very community of readers, contributors, and writing workshop participants, and this time is no different! We begin our eighth year by welcoming four new members to our close-knit team:
Aparna R is a Ph.D. Research Scholar at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, India. She currently shuttles between Mumbai and Kerala. Her broad research interests include gender studies, cultural studies, and self-narratives. As a freelancer, she has worn many hats—copyeditor, proofreader, and English-Malayalam translator. A long-time reader of Ala, Aparna brings in an astute sense of its trajectory and a multifaceted set of skills for our bilingual content.
Anjana S is a PhD student in Development Studies at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. Her research explores everydayness in the gendered socio-spatial processes of contemporary Kozhikode city, exploring how practices of labor, leisure, consumption, and belonging shape urban life. Anjana is fascinated by cities, spaces, and social theory, and believes that every street corner has a secret to tell. Anjana first worked with Ala as a contributor, and then joined the team to bring her creative energies and keen eye to our Malayalam content.
Amrutha R is a dancer and researcher with a postgraduate degree in English literature from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. Her research interests span disability studies, archival histories, and dance pedagogy in South Asia. As a performer and academic, her work focuses on interrogating the politics of the body in motion—both in theory and practice, attempting to bridge the two worlds. Amrutha’s experience with a range of archival and collaborative projects holds exciting new possibilities for Ala.
Nihira Ram, based in Bangalore, is a writer and communications specialist for the development sector. She is currently working with the Square Circle Clinic (formerly Project 39A), NALSAR, a criminal justice legal aid and research centre. For her Masters’ research, she examined the topography of sound in 19th-century British South Asia with a focus on the intimate lives of labouring women, the colonial medical apparatus, and anti-war mobilizations. Nihira’s extensive experience in utilizing multimedia storytelling techniques to disseminate research is an asset to Ala.
Apart from old-timers Renu, Hari, and Shilpa, these are the people who will be helming Ala in the year to come and beyond. Our sincere thanks and fond farewell to the editors who were an integral part of the team these last two years: Sreedevi Dileep, Susruthan, and Deepti Sreeram. Thanks to them, we were able to sustain Ala’s investment in Malayalam content through translations and original contributions, successfully host a third edition of our writing workshop in 2023, and run a second season of Ala’s podcast on education in Kerala. This is apart from working together on a great set of articles, including a commentary series based on the newly digitized archives of the historic, colonial-era newspaper, Svadeshabhimani. We are happy to report that our Malayalam content gets almost as much attention as our English content, and hope to continue building up this engagement in the coming year. We were also very excited to see that one of Ala’s most listened-to podcast episodes (in Malayalam, with an English text translation) is now part of Kannur University’s BA English syllabus! This is the final episode of our first season, where we had a very engaging and wide-ranging conversation with scholar-activists Rekha Raj and Malavika Binny about the history of clothing in Kerala. We are grateful to Drs. Binny and Raj and the many others featured in our podcast episodes who take the time and effort to bring their work to a wider audience.
In the last seven years, the space of Kerala-related blogs and social media channels featuring content at the intersections of academic research and popular writing has widened considerably. These include The Malabar Journal, the Kerala Museum’s ‘Janal Talks’ series, and the events of the I-SHORE collective. There are now a good number of Malayalam podcasts too. We want to especially mention a fun new podcast on cinema in Kerala, Polandinte Patti, which also refers to Ala in a couple of their episodes! This new terrain offers Ala the opportunities to challenge ourselves, collaborate, and learn. In the coming year, we hope to focus more on our social media presence, start a third season of our podcast, host a long-promised third edition of our highly popular writing workshop, and experiment with a range of new formats and article series.
While brainstorming our new podcast season, the following ideas emerged: a conversation around arts and politics in the context of the upcoming Kochi Biennale and Kerala’s festival space in general; a series breaking down recent academic publications in engaging ways for a popular audience; and a roundtable series presenting the editorial team’s offbeat takes on timely topics, drawing from Ala’s archive and other sources. Needless to say, each theme will focus on Ala’s central goal—to take specialised knowledge about Kerala to a wider audience, offering critical and research-based takes on all things Kerala. അഞ്ജന എസ്. : മുംബൈയിലെ ടാറ്റ ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ട് ഓഫ് സോഷ്യൽ സയൻസസിൽ (TISS) ഡെവലപ്മെന്റ് സ്റ്റഡീസിൽ പി.എച്ച്.ഡി ഗവേഷകയാണ് അഞ്ജന. സമകാലീന കോഴിക്കോട് നഗരത്തിലെ ലിംഗാധിഷ്ഠിത സാമൂഹ്യ–ഭൗതിക പ്രക്രിയകളിലെ ദൈനംദിന ജീവിതമാണ് അവരുടെ ഗവേഷണ വിഷയം. വിനോദം, ഉപഭോഗം, തൊഴിൽ എന്നീ ഘടകങ്ങൾ നഗരജീവിതത്തെ എങ്ങനെ സ്വാധീനിക്കുന്നു എന്നതിനെ അവർ സൂക്ഷ്മമായി നോക്കിക്കാണുന്നു. നഗരങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചും, സാമൂഹിക സിദ്ധാന്തങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചുമുള്ള വിഷയങ്ങളാണ് അഞ്ജനയുടെ മുഖ്യ ഗവേഷണതാത്പര്യങ്ങൾ. ഓരോ നഗരത്തിനും, തെരുവിനും, അതിന്റേതായ ഒരു കഥ പറയാനുണ്ടെന്ന് അവർ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു. മുമ്പ് അലയ്ക്കുവേണ്ടി എഴുതിയിട്ടുള്ള അഞ്ജന, തന്റെ മലയാള ഭാഷാപ്രാവീണ്യവും, സർഗ്ഗാത്മക ഊർജ്ജവും, സൂക്ഷ്മമായ നിരീക്ഷണശേഷിയും ഈ കൂട്ടായ്മയിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുവരുന്നു.
അമൃത ആർ. : ഡൽഹിയിലെ ജവഹർലാൽ നെഹ്രു സർവകലാശാലയിൽ നിന്നും ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് സാഹിത്യത്തിൽ ബിരുദാനന്തര ബിരുദം നേടിയിട്ടുള്ള അമൃത നർത്തകിയും ഗവേഷകയുമാണ്. ഡിസബിലിറ്റി സ്റ്റഡീസ്, ആർക്കൈവൽ ചരിത്രങ്ങൾ, ദക്ഷിണേഷ്യയിലെ ഡാൻസ് പെഡഗോജി എന്നിവയാണ് അവരുടെ ഗവേഷണതാൽപ്പര്യങ്ങൾ. പ്രായോഗിക-സൈദ്ധാന്തിക തലങ്ങൾ സംയോജിപ്പിക്കുംവിധം ചലിക്കുന്ന ശരീങ്ങളുടെ രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തെ അവലോകനം ചെയ്യുന്നതാണ് അമൃതയുടെ ഗവേഷണം. വിവിധതരം ആർക്കൈവൽ ഗവേഷണകൂട്ടായ്മകളിൽ പങ്കെടുത്തിട്ടുള്ള അമൃതയുടെ അനുഭവം അലയ്ക്ക് പുതുമയാർന്ന ദിശകൾ പ്രധാനം ചെയ്യുമെന്ന് ഞങ്ങൾ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു.
നിഹിര രാം: നിഹിര ബംഗളൂരുവിൽ അധിവസിക്കുന്ന എഴുത്തുകാരിയും, വികസനമേഖലയിൽ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന കമ്മ്യൂണിക്കേഷൻസ് വിദഗ്ധയുമാണ്. നിലവിൽ അവർ ഹൈദരാബാദിലെ നാൽസാർ (NALSAR) സർവകലാശാലയോടനുബന്ധിച്ചുള്ള സ്ക്വയർ സർകിൾ ക്ലിനിക് (മുൻപ് Project 39A) എന്ന ക്രിമിനൽ ജസ്റ്റിസ് നിയമസഹായ–ഗവേഷണ കേന്ദ്രത്തിൽ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നു. അവരുടെ മാസ്റ്റേഴ്സ് ഗവേഷണം പത്തൊൻപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ദക്ഷിണേഷ്യയിലെ ശബ്ദഭൂപ്രകൃതിയെ ആസ്പദമാക്കിയതായിരുന്നു—അവിടെ തൊഴിൽ ചെയ്തു വന്ന സ്ത്രീകളുടെ സ്വകാര്യ-അനുഭവലോകങ്ങൾ, കൊളോണിയൽ മെഡിക്കൽ സംവിധാനങ്ങൾ, യുദ്ധവിരുദ്ധ സമരങ്ങൾ എന്നിവയെ കേന്ദ്രീകരിക്കുന്ന പഠനമായിരുന്നു അത്. ഗവേഷണപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളെ മൾട്ടിമീഡിയ കഥപറച്ചിലിലൂടെ പ്രേക്ഷകരിലേക്ക് എത്തിക്കുന്നതിൽ നിഹിരയ്ക്കുള്ള വിശാലമായ പരിചയം അലയ്ക്ക് ഒരു വിലപ്പെട്ട മുതൽക്കൂട്ടായിരിക്കും.
